New Miami Stadium

The Marlins would be total fools to move to another city. Miami is the 6th largest metropolitan area in the nation, more than 5 million people in total. Of the cities they are looking at moving to, Portland is 25th, San Antonio 29th, Las Vegas is 36th, and Charlotte 37th, all with less than 2 million in population. Any owner with half a brain and a World Almanac could figure out that moving to one of these small market cities with 40% of the population base is probably not going to help the bottom line. The Marlins drew 23,000 a game last year; not great, but they aren't nearly in Expos territory either. And the odds of that figure increasing in Portland, San Antonio, Las Vegas or Charlotte are laughable. And I love baseball and everything, but even I can think of better things to do in Las Vegas.

But I digress. This is a diagram of a new stadium for the Marlins. The owners should build an open air stadium like this, and forget the retractable roof. I know games get rained out sometimes, but it takes a lot of rainouts and incremental attendance decreases to pay for a $100 million dollar roof on a stadium. Maybe play more day games, before the heat of the afternoon kicks up thunderstorms.

The stadium has a capacity of 37,000. 17,000 would be in the lower grandstand, split between lower boxes (9,500) and reserved (7,500). The second level would be the club/suite level, with 1,500 club seats and 45 suites. The upper level would hold 11,000, the left field bleachers would hold 6,000, and the restaurant/bar in the left field corner would hold 500. The right field wall would be tall like Fenway (25 feet is probably enough though) right in front of a street, but the top 15 feet would be wire mesh, so the grandstand could see downtown beyond it.

Hope you like it.
