Soccer at the Corner-Tiger Stadium Renovation

Here's a idea I can't believe hasn't been persued yet. The city of Detroit is broke, it can't afford to do anything with Tiger Stadium, even tear it down. Old Tiger Stadium sits there next to I-75 and it still looks good from the outside, hardly different than when last used. The city of Detroit doesn't need 3 huge outdoor stadiums, but it might use a smaller one for less major uses. I think everyone wants to see Tiger Stadium preserved somehow, but it needs to be used for that to occur.

Major League Soccer is now an established league (its getting there, anyway). The average attendance for an MLS game is about 15,000, and has been for a while. I think there are some soccer fans in Metro Detroit, and MLS may expand again soon. So I think the City of Detroit should think about offering Tiger Stadium to MLS for $1; the city is just hemorraging money on it right now. MLS could scale down Tiger Stadium to a 30,000 seat stadium by tearing down all of the right field stands, and most of the upper deck except for along the existing 3rd base line; then add a bleacher section in existing left field to be closer to the soccer game. I think this configuration would make for a really good soccer stadium, people would come to see old Tiger Stadium back in use again, and MLS would get a piece of history that it really doesn't have right now; granted, updating old Tiger Stadium might cost about as much as building a new soccer stadium. And the stadium could also be used for high school and Eastern Michigan football, and it might be a good venue for concerts and US Soccer matches. I think the old stadium could still be used 40-50 times a year; let me know what you think.

(This is just a seating chart I found and modified. It's not quite as good as my other drawings.)
