New Seattle Arena - Updated 11-28-07

So the Seattle Supersonics may leave Seattle. How ridiculous. After 40 years of continued strong fan support, the team will probably move to Oklahoma City at the end of the year. What a shame. And what a surpirse, the citizens don't want to dump $500 million on a couple of team owners from Oklahoma!

The way I see it, the NBA's loss should be the NHL's gain. If I'm Gary Bettman, and I see the NBA ready to bail on Seattle, I'm talking to prospective NHL expansion team owners. The second the Sonics move to Oklahoma City, I announce the new NHL expansion team for the 2009-2010 season. They could play in the Tacoma Dome until a new arena is built; anything to convert a basketball town to a hockey town! The city even has a history with hockey, as the Seattle Metropolitans were the first U.S. team to win the Stanley Cup in 1917. In fact, that sounds like a pretty good name for the new expansion team, the Seattle Mets!

This is my newly modified design for a new Seattle Supersonics basketball arena, as suggested by one of my readers, and NHL arena, as per my suggestion. It is a little different; it has a small exclusive lower loge level with 12 rows (green) and 28 suites for the high rollers. The majority of the seats would reside in the main level. This level would consist of 33 rows on the sidelines and 47 rows on the ends, containing about 14,000 regular seats (yellow) and 1,350 club seats (gold). Above it all, 60 more suites would ring the top of the arena. The seating on the ends would be one fairly steep, undivided tier. This would be a very intimidating look to visiting players, and would be very loud! Total capacity is 19,000 for hockey and 19,900 for basketball.
